BYD launches e-platform 3.0 for BEVs, debuts new concept model Ocean-X

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On September 8, BYD officially launched its BEV-dedicated e-platform 3.0, which the company expects to help the global smart electric vehicle (EV) industry advance faster by at least three years.

According to BYD, the e-platform 3.0's advantages relies on four major aspects, including intelligence, high efficiency, safety, and aesthetics.

As for intelligence, the newly-launched platform comes with BYD's in-house developed vehicle operating system, which provides a high-standard cooperative system for high-level intelligent driving. It upgrades the conventional distributed electrical/electronic architecture (EEA) to the domain centralized architecture, which is divided into 4 sets of domain control systems for smart powertrain, vehicle control, smart cockpit, and intelligent driving, so as to deliver better interaction between vehicles and people, as well as vehicles and other things on roads.

Notably, the domain control system of vehicle control has gone into volume production, making BYD the first company in China to make the achievement.

With regard to efficiency, the e-platform 3.0 comes standard with a newly upgraded 8-in-1 module for the drive system, the first-of-its-kind in the world, which allows the overall efficiency to exceed 89% and enables a range topping 1,000 kilometers for a car. Thanks to the all-new four-wheel-drive system, an electric vehicle (EV) based on the platform can zip from 0-100km/h within only 29 seconds. With 800V fast charging technology, a 5-minute charging can add a range of 150km to an EV.

When it comes to safety, the e-platform 3.0 significantly improves the integrity of an all-electric vehicle’s structural design and BYD’s ultra-safe Blade Battery pack, in a bid to double torsional stiffness of the car body.

In terms of aesthetics, the EVs riding on the platform will feature shorter front overhangs, wider wheelbase, lower center of gravity, larger driving and seating space with a drag coefficient (Cd) as low as 0.21.

Ocean-X concept

At the launching ceremony, BYD also unveiled the concept model “Ocean-X” built on the e-platform 3.0. Positioned as a mid-sized high-performance sports sedan, the concept also carries the aforementioned features, such as the 8-in-1 module, integrated car body design, four-wheel-drive system, and intelligent domain control architecture.

The first mass-produced model based on the e-platform 3.0 is the BYD Dolphin, which hit the market at the 2021 Chengdu Motor Show last month. Coming with four trim levels, the Dolphin is priced between 93,800 yuan ($14,510) and 121,800 yuan ($18,840) after incentives.
