Gasgoo Munich- In early August, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) released a flash report on July wholesale sales. Based on preliminary monthly data, estimated wholesale volumes of new energy passenger vehicles from domestic automakers reached 1.47 million units — a 23% year-on-year jump and a marginal 1% dip from June. That annual growth rate marks the fastest monthly pace since 2026.
By contrast, the broader auto market is straining under weak demand. New energy vehicles have emerged as the primary engine of growth for the domestic passenger car sector, while the market divide between new energy models and traditional internal combustion engines continues to widen.
Penetration Approaches 70% as NEV Sales Solidify
July's 23% surge in the NEV market stems from a convergence of forces: supportive policies, robust supply, and shifting consumer demand.

On the policy front, government support remains firm. According to a joint announcement by the Ministry of Finance, State Taxation Administration, and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the purchase tax for new energy vehicles bought between January 1, 2026, and December 31, 2027, will be cut by half. The tax reduction is capped at 15,000 yuan per passenger vehicle.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Commerce and other agencies are accelerating trade-in programs, with many local governments rolling out complementary subsidies for vehicle replacements. A 2026 campaign to promote NEVs in rural areas — organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and four other departments — also deepened its reach in July, effectively tapping into lower-tier market potential.

On the supply side, major automakers are rounding out their NEV lineups, with product cycles accelerating noticeably. In July, industry leaders like BYD, Geely, Chery, Leapmotor, XPENG, and NIO rolled out a slew of refreshed or all-new models. Intelligent features are now standard, with advanced driver-assistance systems and panoramic smart cockpits significantly enhancing the user experience.
Breakthroughs in power battery and charging technologies have pushed the range of mainstream models beyond 500 kilometers, with some exceeding 700 kilometers. This effectively alleviates "range anxiety" — a critical psychological turning point as consumers shift from "hesitant observation" to "active choice".
Consumer acceptance has moved past the "early adopter" phase into a cycle of mass adoption. CPCA data shows retail penetration hit 62.9% in May and climbed to 64.4% in July. This signals that NEVs have secured a firm foothold in the mainstream consumer psyche, with purchasing behavior transitioning naturally from "policy-driven" to "experience-driven."
Improving charging infrastructure is also bolstering end-user adoption. Data from the National Energy Administration shows that as of the end of June 2026, China's total EV charging infrastructure reached 23.057 million units, up 43.2% year-on-year. Public chargers accounted for 5.009 million, while private chargers totaled 18.048 million. County-level coverage has risen to 98.61%, with over 180,000 high-power charging guns deployed, making recharging increasingly convenient.
Driven by these factors, the NEV market achieved high year-on-year growth in July — typically a slow season — with only a marginal 1% dip from June. Endogenous growth momentum is robust, far outperforming the traditional internal combustion engine vehicle market.
Exports: The Strong Engine Behind 1.47 Million Sales
Exports contributed significantly to July's gains. Persistently high global oil prices are fueling international demand for NEVs, while domestic automakers leverage their advantages in energy efficiency and cost-performance to secure a growing stream of overseas orders.
Across the industry, the export surge is undeniable. According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, auto exports from January to June 2026 totaled 5.096 million units — a record high and a 65.3% increase year-on-year. Of that, NEV exports jumped 1.2-fold to 2.355 million units. In June alone, total auto exports surpassed 1 million for the first time, with NEVs accounting for 523,000 units — a surge of over 160%.
For individual automakers, BYD sold 419,000 NEVs in July, up 21.8% year-on-year, marking its 62nd consecutive month as China's top seller by monthly volume. Its overseas sales approached 180,000 units, soaring 124.3%. Chery Group exported 202,533 vehicles, up 70.1%, setting a new monthly record for the fifth straight month. Geely Auto exported 106,663 units, a 202% jump.
The continued expansion of Chinese brands abroad has become a vital pillar supporting domestic NEV production and sales.
Regarding the long-term landscape, Cui Dongshu noted that the surge in NEV exports stems from a convergence of industrial, market, and policy dividends. "China possesses the world's most complete NEV supply chain," he said, "with significant scale advantages in lithium batteries, core components, and vehicle manufacturing. Our cost structure and iteration speed outpace foreign automakers."

On the domestic front, the electrification transition of leading automakers is paying off. Major players like BYD, Geely, Chery, Leapmotor, Tesla China, SAIC-GM-Wuling, SAIC Motor, XPENG, NIO, and Great Wall Motor all posted record wholesale volumes for July. Leapmotor delivered 101,267 vehicles globally, up 102%, becoming the first startup to breach the 100,000-unit monthly delivery threshold. Tesla China delivered over 93,000 units, its highest monthly tally this year, rising 37.8%.
Overall, the NEV passenger vehicle market delivered a standout performance in July 2026, with 1.47 million wholesale units and a 23% annual growth rate. Policy incentives, product upgrades, shifting consumer sentiment, and improved infrastructure — combined with the powerful pull of overseas markets — form the core drivers of this momentum.
As market share continues to climb, the dominant position of new energy vehicles in the domestic passenger car market is being cemented.
