International Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association Initiates Four Standards, Including Cryo-compressed Hydrogen

Edited by Yara From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich- The International Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association has cleared the necessary reviews and officially launched the development of four new standards covering hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. The new standards will address cryo-compressed hydrogen, stationary solid-state storage, hydrogen swapping for fuel cell trucks, and metal hydride storage systems for distributed power generation.

For land vehicle applications, HynErgy GmbH has proposed a standard on "Cryo-compressed Hydrogen (CcH₂) Technology Standardization." This initiative aims to build a coordinated framework covering storage system safety, hardware interfaces for refueling, and operational protocols. The goal is to support the safe deployment of CcH₂ technology across the land vehicle sector.

Turning to industrial applications, China Electric Technology Research (Xuzhou) Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has put forward a "Technical Specification for Stationary Solid-State Hydrogen Storage Systems in Industrial Hydrogen Chains." Focusing on the full lifecycle of stationary metal hydride storage for hydrogen energy storage and green hydrogen chemical applications, the standard outlines eight core technical modules. These range from terminology and material design to manufacturing and inspection, all designed to unify technical requirements and lower trade barriers.

On the commercial vehicle front, Shanghai Jiening New Energy Technology Development Co., Ltd. is proposing "Technical Requirements for Hydrogen Swapping of Fuel Cell Trucks." This specification defines station layouts, vehicle-side interfaces, swapping procedures, and safety protocols. The objective is clear: boost interoperability and accelerate the commercial rollout of fuel cell trucks.

For distributed generation, Hydro-JiDian Energy Technology (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. has introduced "Metal Hydride Hydrogen Storage Systems for Distributed Power Generation." Targeting off-grid hydrogen fuel cell ultra-fast charging scenarios, this standard specifies material selection, heat exchange structure design, safety requirements, and delivery specifications for solid-state storage units. It effectively fills a regulatory gap in this niche market.

All four standards have now entered the development phase. The International Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association plans to convene seminars and working sessions shortly to advance the drafting and refinement of these specifications.
