Jetta M6 Hits the Market: 35-Year "National Icon" Pivots to New Energy

Gasgoo Munich- The Jetta M6 hit the market in Chengdu on October 22. The three variants — 465 Pro, 555 Max, and 555 Ultra — carry sticker prices of 79,800 yuan, 89,800 yuan, and 99,800 yuan, respectively, all landing below the 100,000-yuan mark. Jetta summed up the car's market positioning in a phrase: "Under 100,000 yuan, fully equipped from the start."

The M6's arrival carries dual significance. For the Jetta brand, it's the first localized pure-electric model and the debut product from FAW-Volkswagen Jetta Technology Co. The car signals a fresh electrified and intelligent chapter for a national brand with 35 years of history and 5.3 million household users, operating under an ICE-EV synergy strategy.

For the broader joint-venture camp, the M6 charts a counteroffensive path — blending "German quality with Chinese tech" — in a 100,000-yuan-class NEV market dominated by domestic brands.

Living Up to Jetta's Legacy

Jetta holds a special place in China's automotive history. In 1991, the first domestically produced Jetta rolled off the line, truly bringing passenger cars to Chinese families and ushering in a new era for the household sedan. Over 35 years, Jetta built a reputation for going 1 million kilometers without a major overhaul. "Tough, durable, and solidly built" became the brand's deepest user perception.

Yet in the NEV era, Jetta faces the predicament of all traditional joint-venture brandsalike: the ICE market keeps shrinking, while domestic brands and startups dominate the NEV landscape. Jetta needed a car to prove it remains competitive in the electric age. The M6 was born against this backdrop.

The M6 is the inaugural model from Jetta Technology Co., founded last year as a collaboration between FAW-Volkswagen and local government. Positioned as a tech firm "rooted in Chengdu, radiating globally," the company inherits FAW-Volkswagen's 35 years of manufacturing experience while channeling the innovative vitality of a local tech player.

Jetta proposed having a local team lead product definition, while tapping Volkswagen's R&D resources, FAW's capabilities, and the local supply chain. Accordingly, the M6's product definition and R&D design were spearheaded by the Chinese team.

On the product front, the M6 carries forward Jetta's "German quality" DNA while injecting the technological essence of the EV era. The body uses 86% high-strength steel, with hot-stamped steel accounting for 31% and peak strength reaching 2,000 megapascals; overall torsional rigidity exceeds 38,000 Nm/deg. The battery, developed to Volkswagen standards, endured over 400 validation tests. Behind these numbers lies Jetta's commitment to its "tough and durable" brand roots.

The M6's launch marks Jetta's shift to a fresh product matrix built on deep ICE-EV synergy. Under Jetta's roadmap, the brand will roll out a diversified lineup spanning pure EVs and hybrids. The M6 bears the weight of setting the tone for Jetta's entire NEV lineup.

A Joint-Venture Counteroffensive Starts with the Product: The M6

Domestic brands already hold absolute sway in the 100,000-yuan NEV segment. September sales data show domestic nameplates sweeping the top five spots among NEVs priced under 100,000 yuan.

Joint ventures claim a negligible slice of this market. Their offerings either lack competitive product strength or carry prohibitive prices, making it hard to challenge domestic brands head-on.

The Jetta M6, however, delivers both. Its 79,800-yuan starting price cuts straight into the heart of domestic brands' core price band. The car also comes with a "five lifetime, one guarantee" perks policy: lifetime warranty on the EV powertrain, lifetime full coverage for auto-parking mishaps, lifetime free vehicle checkups, lifetime warranty on original parts, and lifetime full compensation for spontaneous combustion caused by powertrain defects.

Meanwhile, Jetta refrained from blindly piling on features. Instead, it concentrated costs where it counts: safety, space, quality, and smart tech.

On the safety front, the M6's under-battery impact protection absorbs eight times the energy required by national standards. Its rear-end crash test speed hits 80 km/h, far exceeding the 50 km/h national benchmark.

For space, the M6 rides on a 2,820-mm wheelbase with a 91.3% space utilization rate, and cargo volume expands from 542 liters to 1,800 liters. On quality, the car survived endurance validation across two winters and two summers, with corporate durability testing reaching 100,000 km — well beyond the 30,000 km demanded by new regulations.

Another breakthrough for the M6: it is the first among joint-venture brands to bring advanced driver-assistance down to the 100,000-yuan class. Powered by the Horizon Journey 6M chip, the M6 supports urban NOA at speeds from 0 to 120 km/h, and its all-scenario parking has achieved a Guinness World Record.

Horizon founder Yu Kai said at the launch that the Jetta M6 aims to "reject meaningless excessive rivalry and make advanced driving assist truly move toward tech parity." Previously, urban advanced ADAS was largely reserved for models priced at 200,000 yuan and above, while sedans around 100,000 yuan often got watered-down systems.

At the same time, the M6's infotainment system runs three major AI models — Doubao, DeepSeek, and Qianwen — and supports over 650 voice commands. This combo leverages joint-venture strengths in manufacturing and quality control while tapping the leading capabilities of Chinese tech firms in smart features. Jetta has played a differentiated strategy in the 100,000-yuan market: joint-venture quality endorsement paired with domestic-brand pricing strategy.

The Jetta M6's launch marks the EV pivot of a 35-year national icon — and a significant attempt by the joint-venture camp to counterattack in the NEV market. Whether it can gain a firm foothold in the cutthroat 100,000-yuan segment will take time and sales to verify. But at the very least, the M6 proves one thing anew: joint ventures aren't out of chances in the EV era. The key is whether they can drop their guard, embrace change, and answer the market with products that genuinely meet the needs of Chinese families.
