Gasgoo Munich- ZF announced on August 3 that cumulative global production of its electric power steering (EPS) systems has surpassed the 100-million mark.

Since its debut in 2001, ZF's EPS has evolved from a mere alternative to traditional hydraulic steering into a core component of modern vehicle architecture. Today, it is viewed as a critical enabler for software-defined vehicles, opening new avenues for upgrading vehicle performance and personalizing the driving experience.
"This production milestone underscores our leadership in steering technology," said Ramiro Gutierrez, senior vice president of ZF's Steering Systems Business Unit. He noted that EPS has established itself as the industry-standard steering solution—highly efficient, scalable, and software-defined—serving as the foundation for next-generation Steer-by-Wire technology.
Unlike hydraulic systems, which draw power constantly, EPS consumes electricity only when steering input is required—helping cut overall energy consumption and meet emissions targets. ZF's portfolio spans compact passenger cars, high-performance SUVs, and light commercial vehicles, available in three configurations: column, dual-pinion, and belt drives.
ZF emphasized that EPS is paving the way for Steer-by-Wire, a technology that has already entered mass production globally. This production breakthrough is backed by the company's global R&D and manufacturing footprint across Asia, Europe, North America, and South America.
In China, ZF's Asia-Pacific division is focusing on advanced steering systems and was the first to launch localized mass production of Steer-by-Wire. Since localizing EPS manufacturing in 2012, the company has produced over 25 million units in the country, equipping a wide range of domestic and international models.
