However, the midsize sedan segment in China still remains considerably large, with competition as fierce as ever. The VW Passat and Magotan continue to lead the market. Despite that, their largest rivals, models from Japanese manufacturers, remain strong contenders. Several Japanese models can be seen in the segment’s top 10 sales chart. However, sales of most Japanese B-class sedan models in the charts have either failed to grow or even decreased.

Analysis: Comparison of figures from 2016 H1 financial reports of automobile manufacturers in the Chinese market

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - With over half of the year already past, the question arises, which automotive manufacturer has achieved the highest net profits so far? A recent report from the Nanfang Daily revealed that JVs affiliated with Ford, VW and other foreign brands have posted net profit rates far higher than those of domestic own brand manufacturers. On average, JVs earned an average of 20,000 RMB for each new vehicle sale made. However, own brands have been benefiting from increased SUV sales, which have allowed them to somewhat catch up with their JV competitors. However, this growing competition has also increased the average cost each vehicle sold in the country.

Summary: Chinese sales performances of luxury automobile manufacturers in 2016 H1

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - BMW and Mercedes-Benz are still competing for second spot for the luxury automobile market in China. Although Mercedes-Benz’s sales actually surpassed BMW in May, they were unable to catch up to them in terms of total sales for the first half of 2016. Neither Mercedes-Benz nor BMW were able to catch up with Audi, which leads the country’s luxury automobile market.

Summary: 2016 H1 sales target completion rates among major Chinese automotive manufacturers

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - Major automobile manufacturers in the Chinese market had set their sales target well in advance early their year. Now, with half of the year already past, only a minority of those manufacturers managed to achieve at least 50% of their respective sales targets. According to statistics compiled by Gasgoo.com (Chinese), only five manufacturers reported that they had achieved over half of their sales targets: GAC Group, Dongfeng Honda, JAC Motor, FAW Toyota and Geely.

Analysis: Can Chinese own brand SUV sales recover?

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - 2014 and 2015 were important years for the Chinese automobile market and especially for domestic own brand manufacturers in particular. Own brands have been able to overcome difficulties in the sedan segments by shifting their focus towards the SUV and MPV segments, which in turn has allowed them to recover and compete with joint venture manufacturers for market share. Chinese own brands seemed to had finally come into their own stride with the explosion of popularity of Chinese SUV models.
