Shanghai December 28 (Gasgoo.com) Beijing Municipal Environment Protection Bureau, directly affiliated to the Municipal Government, plans to launch the National 5 Emission Standards in 2012, in an effort to eliminate old vehicles and improve the quality of oil, the Beijing News reported Tuesday, citing Du Shaozhong, deputy director of the Bureau.

Due to the number of automobiles (motor vehicles) on the city’s roads growing enormously and fast, the Bureau will still focus on the improvement of air quality and of new vehicle emission standards during the 12th Five-year Plan period (2011-2015), Du said, adding that on each engine, each stage of the implementation of a new emission standard, the single pollutant emissions will be reduced by 30% to 50%.

In addition, Du said Beijing has eliminated more than 150,000 "yellow label cars" - heavy polluting vehicles, and reduced vehicle emissions approximately 313.5 tons per day in the past year.

Beijing will continue to tighten emission limits for automobiles and eliminate old and polluting vehicles in the future, and is intended to take more market and economic measures to have those hazardous air pollutants cleaned up off the roads as soon as possible, putting more fuel efficient and lower-emission vehicles on the roads instead, Du revealed.

China enacted its first emissions controls on automobiles in 2000, equivalent to Euro I standards. China's State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) upgraded emission controls again on July 1, 2004 to the Euro II standard. More stringent emission standard, National Standard III, equivalent to Euro III standards, went into effect on July 1, 2007. Plans are for Euro IV standards to take effect in 2010. Beijing introduced the Euro IV standard in advance on January 1, 2008, became the first city in mainland China to adopt this standard, according to wikipedia.
