Gasgoo Munich- The market launch of BYD's Datang EV on June 17 marks more than the arrival of another electric SUV—it epitomizes the accelerating evolution of China's premium battery-electric vehicle market. As competition intensifies among domestic automakers, the Datang EV enters the segment as a flagship full-size SUV within BYD's Dynasty series, offered in four variants priced from 239,900 yuan to 309,900 yuan.

The model fills a previously unoccupied position in BYD's portfolio, extending the company's reach into the large battery-electric SUV category. Built on BYD's latest-generation chassis architecture and integrating advanced driver-assistance technologies alongside next-generation battery systems, the Datang EV is designed to balance family-oriented practicality with enhanced driving performance. At the same time, it continues the brand's design philosophy rooted in traditional Chinese cultural aesthetics.

The lineup includes both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. The 800 km rear-wheel-drive LiDAR-equipped version is priced at 239,900 yuan, while the 950 km rear-wheel-drive flagship is offered at 269,900 yuan. The 850 km all-wheel-drive flagship carries a starting price of 289,900 yuan, and the range-topping Datang Shengshi (Prosperity) Edition is listed at 309,900 yuan. Through this structure, BYD aims to serve a broad spectrum of consumers, from urban commuters and long-distance family travelers to buyers seeking a more premium mobility experience.

Design language blends technology and cultural identity

Design remains a central component of the vehicle's identity. The Datang EV adopts BYD's "Eastern Design" language, with five solid exterior colors and three dual-tone options available. Its front fascia features a 2.41-meter full-width daytime running light composed of 396 LED elements, complemented by a trapezoidal lower intake and grille detailing inspired by traditional Chinese folding fans. Together with 21-inch wheels and floating wheel-center emblems, these elements reinforce the SUV's full-size presence.

The vehicle's 3,130 mm wheelbase further supports its positioning by maximizing interior space across all three seating rows, while an updated interpretation of BYD's "Chinese knot" taillight design strengthens visual continuity between the front and rear lighting systems.

A cabin designed around family comfort

Inside the cabin, BYD emphasizes a premium environment tailored to family use. Wood-grain accents and references to traditional Chinese architecture introduce warmth into an otherwise technology-focused interior. The cabin incorporates a newly designed steering wheel, a triple-screen cockpit arrangement, and a 50-inch augmented-reality head-up display that projects driving information directly onto the windshield.

Passenger comfort is a recurring theme throughout the interior. A standard 2+2+3 seven-seat layout is complemented by dual zero-gravity front seats featuring ventilation, heating, and massage functions. Second-row occupants receive airline-style "zero-pressure" captain's chairs equipped with adjustable backrests, powered leg rests, and heating functions. Additional amenities—including a fold-down entertainment screen, tray tables, and an onboard refrigerator—are intended to improve long-distance travel experiences.

Technology integration extends beyond infotainment. The SUV features a Devialet premium audio system with a 7.1.4-channel configuration and up to 27 speakers, including dedicated headrest speakers for front-seat occupants. A 2.53-square-meter panoramic glass roof employs a laminated shading structure to reduce sunlight penetration without requiring a conventional sunshade. BYD has also introduced customizable magnetic shortcut controls that allow frequently used functions to be assigned according to driver preference.

Practicality remains a key consideration. The interior incorporates 47 storage compartments, while a 252-liter powered front trunk supports gesture-activated opening. Electronic folding capability across all three seating rows significantly increases cargo capacity, and wider interior passageways improve third-row accessibility.

Advanced chassis and intelligent driving technologies

Beneath the exterior, the Datang EV showcases some of BYD's most advanced chassis technologies. Every variant is equipped with the DiSus-A dual-chamber air suspension system, which supports ride-height adjustments of up to 100 mm and provides two selectable suspension stiffness settings. The system also incorporates road-preview technology capable of identifying bumps and obstacles in advance, enabling proactive suspension responses to enhance ride quality.

Standard rear-wheel steering allows rear-wheel movement of up to ±7 degrees, reducing turning radius, improving maneuverability in confined urban settings, enabling a crab-walk mode, and contributing to greater stability at higher speeds.

The vehicle also adopts BYD's latest God's Eye - BYD Intelligent Driving System 5.0. Among its capabilities are automatic obstacle avoidance and automated U-turn execution across both urban and highway driving environments.

Long range and flexible powertrain choices

Power is supplied by BYD's second-generation Blade Battery technology paired with a high-voltage fast-charging system. Buyers can choose between single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations.

Depending on battery specification, official driving ranges are rated at 800 km, 850 km, or 950 km. The all-wheel-drive version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. BYD has also confirmed that a plug-in hybrid variant will be introduced at a later date to accommodate a broader range of consumer charging and usage preferences.

Entering one of China's most competitive EV segments

The Datang EV enters a market segment that has become one of the most fiercely contested in China. Competitors including the Leapmotor D19, ONVO L90, and DEEPAL S09 are all targeting consumers interested in large premium electric SUVs, although each emphasizes different product strengths. Within this competitive landscape, the Datang EV serves as the flagship SUV of BYD's Dynasty series while complementing the company's higher-end DENZA and YANGWANG offerings.

Viewed in a broader industry context, the Datang EV illustrates how competition in China's EV sector is increasingly shifting beyond range figures alone. Comfort technologies, intelligent driving systems, suspension sophistication, and cabin experience are becoming critical differentiators. As a result, the model's market reception may provide an important indication of how consumers evaluate value and innovation in the next stage of premium electric SUV competition in China.
