China's Ministry of Commerce Sets Path for Expanding and Upgrading 2026 Auto Consumption

Edited by Aya From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich- On February 6, China's Ministry of Commerce convened a symposium with automakers to discuss the current state of vehicle circulation and consumption, as well as the road ahead. Attendees included industry bodies like the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers and the China Automobile Dealers Association, alongside representatives from major automakers. Vice Minister Sheng Qiuping chaired the meeting and engaged directly with company representatives.

Sheng noted that the auto industry serves as a pillar of the national economy, crucial for stabilizing growth, boosting domestic demand, and fostering new quality productive forces. He highlighted that in 2025, the domestic market delivered a strong performance across the industry, solidifying consumption's role as a stabilizer. With deep roots, a long value chain, vast untapped potential, and sustained policy continuity, China's auto market has a solid foundation for driving consumption across the entire ecosystem.

Looking ahead to 2026, Sheng revealed plans to coordinate with several ministries—including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Transport, and the National Financial Regulatory Administration. The goal is to strengthen policy synergy and institutional innovation, ensuring existing policies and incremental measures work in tandem. Key initiatives include optimizing trade-in programs, launching pilot reforms in vehicle circulation and consumption, and refining the industry management system to systematically scale up consumption and upgrade its structure.

Corporate representatives acknowledged that recent national policies to spur consumption have effectively driven steady growth and structural optimization in the auto market. They pledged to focus on their core operations and collaborate to push for high-quality industry development. During the symposium, government officials also addressed specific concerns and suggestions raised by the companies on site.
