Chrysler Group LLC notified Wisconsin authorities on Friday that it will close its Kenosha engine plant in early October, eliminating some 575 jobs.
Chrysler, the No. 3 U.S.-based automaker, has several other engine plants in Michigan and Mexico. The long-expected plant closing announcement comes one week after Chrysler said it would keep a Detroit area assembly plant open permanently.
Chrysler said in the notice that it will close the Kenosha plant on October 8 or within two weeks of that date. Workers at the plant are represented by the United Auto Workers and the International Association of Machinists. Some of the UAW workers may have the right to work in other union-represented Chrysler plants.
The plant was not part of Chrysler's long-term plans when the company emerged from a U.S.-government supported bankruptcy in 2009 under the management control of Italy's Fiat SpA (FIA.MI).
