  •  Next generation technologies will further shape trends of active safety and automated driving

ZF TRW, the active and passive safety division of ZF Friedrichshafen AG, is today underliningits capabilities in Braking and Steering systems at an event at its winter test track in Arvidsjaur, Northern Sweden. Using the slogan ‘Driven by Safety’, the Company is demonstrating a number of technologies and highlighting their fundamental role in enabling the next generation of vehicle safety and automated driving.

Among other innovations, ZF TRW is showcasing:

  • The Integrated Brake Control (IBC) system – starting production in 2018, IBC is a vacuum independent technology which simplifies the brake system architecture while offering enhanced performance. For the first time, the technology is being demonstrated on a prototype SUV – highlighting its suitability and scalability for full size SUVs as well as the full range of passenger cars.
  • Advanced Electronic Stability Control (EBC460) – on the latest production BMW 7 Series, ZF TRW is demonstrating its most advanced slip control system. In addition to its wide range of braking functionality, the technology acts as a so called ‘black-box’ integration hub – hosting software algorithms to control certain automated driving, safety, chassis and drivetrain functions.
  • Electrically Powered Steering (EPS) dual pinion and Active Kinematics Control (AKC) – for the first time, the company is demonstrating the potential of integrating both front and rear axle steering, using a mainstream prototype vehicle as a concept study. Combining dual pinion EPS on the front with AKC on the rear, the driver can benefit from a more advanced steer feel and handling performance, enhanced stability and improved agility with a reduced turning radius.

Peter Lake, Member of the Board of Management of ZF Friedrichshafen AG and executive vice president, Sales and Business Development, ZF TRW, commented: “ZF is a proven supplier with decades of experience across its chosen technologies, and a passion for vehicle safety. We are ideally placed to support customers as we move into a new era of active safety – driven by an increasingly stringent regulatory landscape - and automated driving.

"In Steering, we have a broad technology portfolio – from column drive EPS, to dual pinion EPS and belt drive (BD) EPS for a range of vehicle segments. Our EPS BD offers an excellent fit for automated driving solutions due to its precision and low friction; we have developed a benchmark which has received high praise from our customers for the level of sensitive and precise steering feedback.

"In Braking, we are showcasing a full range of electronic and foundation braking technology including advanced Electric Park Brake (EPB) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) systems.”

Coupled with itsadvanced cameras and radars, high dynamic standard ESC, Premium ESC with six piston pump and next generation IBC system, the companycan offer a continuum of brake system pressure builds yielding excellent Automatic Emergency Braking performance. It isalso future proofing these systems and has developed powertrain independent variants that enable regenerative braking.

"Furthermore, we are showing how the combination of ZF and ZF TRW technologies will lead to advanced systems with even higher levels of vehicle control and functionality.”
