The head of Italian car company Fiat held a meeting on Monday with counterparts from Germany's Opel, the General Motors subsidiary it hopes to take over, sources close to the matter told AFP.

Sergio Marchionne met GM Europe boss Carl-Peter Forster and Opel chief Hans Demant for a two-hour meeting in the western German city of Ruesselsheim, Opel's base, the source said.

Fiat is in negotiations to take over Opel -- which directly employs 26,000 people in Germany -- after entering into an alliance with stricken GM rival Chrysler.

The German government has asked investors interested in Opel to submit plans by Wednesday.

Canadian auto components manufacturer Magna, linked to Russian vehicle company GAZ, as well as US investment fund Ripplewood have also been linked to interest in Opel.
