GM making changes to overseas production

Gasgoo From MarketWatch

General Motors Corp. will shift more production of U.S. bound vehicles to plants in China, South Korea, Mexico and Japan and away from plants in Europe, Canada and Australia, the Detroit News reported on its Web site Saturday citing a leaked confidential report submitted to Congress.

The paper said the auto maker will limit its total imports to one third of domestic sales.

American labor groups aren't pleased by the move, which seems to solidify the company's policy of importing a significant number of vehicles from cheap-labor countries while relying on American taxpayers to fund the company's rescue, the paper said.

But a GM spokesman said none of the $15 billion the company received from the U.S. Treasury will be used to fund overseas operations.
