GM, SAIC to enter India's LCV segment this year

Shanghai, March 23 (Gasgoo.com) General Motors said recently that the company and its Chinese partner SAIC Motor will be entering into the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment in India this year in addition to launching an E-Spark car model there, media reported.

Meanwhile, GM will launch the electric version of its small car Spark in the Indian market by the end of this year, as "the first four-door passenger car in the world in this segment," said GM Motors' Marketing Director Gaurav Gupta.

Considering the extra cost incurred on electric engines, the E-Spark's price may be a little higher than the Spark, a profitable model which has been made by SAIC-GM-Wuling, GM's mini-commercial vehicle venture in China, and sold by GM in the global markets.

The light commercial vehicles that GM and SAIC will release in India this year will be produced by their new joint venture formed for the Indian market. SAIC has become a major shareholder of GM's Indian unit.

When asked if there was any plan [for GM] to export engines to China, Gupta said the company would look at all business opportunities allowed by the laws of both the countries.
