GM will lay off about 1,600 salaried employees

General Motors Corp. will lay off about 1,600 salaried employees throughout the company. The cuts will affect all areas of GM.

The roughly 1,600 salaried employees to be cut are being notified Monday through Wednesday and most will leave the company immediately, a GM spokesperson said.

GM started 2009 with 29,650 salaried employees. The company said Feb. 10 that it would cut its salaried work force by 3,400 by the end of 2009 and achieve most of that reduction by May 1.

GM is part of a joint venture with Toyota that runs the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. plant in Fremont. The plant employs 4,800 jobs, and according to the Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal, there are 15,000 people employed by 1,000 suppliers throughout the Bay Area and the state that depend on the plant.
