Lei Jun: 200 billion yuan R&D investment over the next five years

Editor team From Gasgoo

On Jan. 8, Gasgoo noted that Lei Jun wrote: "Over the past five years, we pledged to invest 100 billion yuan in core technology R&D and actually spent about 105 billion. Starting this year, we are committing 200 billion yuan to R&D over the next five years. In 2026, Xiaomi's technological innovation is expected to see a fresh breakthrough. This year, we hope to achieve a 'grand convergence' in a single device of our in-house chip, in-house OS and in-house large AI model. At the same time, our robotics business will also make new progress."

On Jan. 7, Xiaomi Group held the "Xiaomi Annual Technology Awards Ceremony."

Summing up at the event, Lei Jun said competition for this year's award hit a new high, with many prizes going to foundational core technologies such as chips, smartphones, automobiles, AI and materials. "This year, two-thirds of the winning projects made extensive use of AI — redoing all our existing work the AI way."

Below is the full text of Lei Jun's Jan. 8 Weibo post:

At Xiaomi, the first big event at the start of each year is presenting the 10-million-yuan Technology Award to outstanding engineers and engineering teams. Since 2020, we've presented it 7 times, awarding 75 million yuan in total.

This year's 10-million-yuan Technology Award drew 154 projects, with intense competition. Many winners came from foundational core technologies, including chips, smartphones, automobiles, AI and materials. In the end, the Xuanjie O1 team took the top prize! Congratulations to the chip team!

Over the past five years, we pledged 100 billion yuan in R&D and actually spent about 105 billion. Over the next five years, we plan to invest 200 billion yuan in R&D. 200 billion isn't a small sum, but we must spend it where it counts — and keep tackling foundational core technologies such as chips, OS and AI to truly build the moat for Xiaomi's "human–car–home" full ecosystem. I believe that as R&D advances step by step, our results and technical strength will become increasingly evident.

At this conference, I emphasized three points:

First, technology as the foundation is Xiaomi's unchanging iron rule;

Second, the engineer mindset is a core value at Xiaomi;

Third, we must build the best, top-tier platform for outstanding engineering talent and continuously enhance engineers' sense of achievement and well-being.
