Toyota Motors President Akio Toyoda arrived in Beijing March 1 and held a press conference to apologize to the public for Toyota's massive global recall, after the RAV4 recall in China officially started February 28.
Reporters learned that Toyota will recall 75,552 RAV4 vehicles manufactured in China between March 19, 2009 and January 25, 2010, and 4S stores will service the vehicles and replace the faulty accelerator pedals for free, using auto parts from the U.S. CTS Corporation.
However, RAV4 sales have not been affected for the moment. A salesperson from Beijing Yuantong Bridge Toyota Motor Sales Company told the "Daily Economic News" that there are only 2 RAV4 vehicles left in the store, and most models still need to be booked in advance.
But as reporters learned, some consumers have thought about canceling the reservation over concerns about the quality of Toyota vehicles.
Around 75,000 RAV4 to be recalled
Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Company submitted a recall report to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) January 28, and decided to recall 75,552 RAV4 vehicles manufactured in China between March 19, 2009 and January 25, 2010, starting February 28.
"Except for the recalled RAV4 vehicles, sales of other Toyota models in China are not affected because they did not use the faulty components," Toyota (China) told the "Daily Economic News."
Reporters learned that the recall is now well underway in the 4S stores, and some stores have already performed the after-sales repair work ahead of time.
