The New Zealand Herald - Almost 12,000 motorists have been fined for using their mobile phones since a ban was introduced 18 months ago.
On average police have issued 650 tickets per month since the ban on using hand-held mobile phones while driving was introduced in 2009, Radio New Zealand reported.
This number had risen to more than 700 per month in the last 12 months.
Automobile Association motoring affairs general manager Mike Noon said the number infringing was disappointing and showed people were becoming complacent about the ban.
