Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co. has begun manufacturing parts in its Chennai factory to be sent to facilities in Thailand and China.

Nissan is also shifting the production of Micra by next year to coincide with the launch of cars from the same sales platforms in China and Thailand says The Hindu.

Mr. Kiminobu Tokuyama, Managing Director and CEO, Nissan Motor India was quoted by the Mumbai Business Group as saying: “Trial production of parts has begun for the global platform cars scheduled to debut in China and Thailand next year. The tests have been very successful so far.”

Nissan is adopting a strategy that will lead to its manufacturing process spread out in five countries. In the region, India, China and Thailand have been chosen as the major manufacturing areas with the possibility of also extending capacity to Russia and Brazil.

Nissan is not the only Japanese automaker to incorporate India in its manufacturing formula. Toyota and Honda will also implement a similar strategy with plans to expand manufacturing in other BRIC member nations.

India has become an attractive destination for manufacturing because of its vendor base and competitive pricing.
