Gasgoo Munich- Toyota Motor Corp. is shaking up its executive ranks. Sukenaga Ota, general manager of the Lexus sales promotion department, will become the new chief officer for Toyota China, replacing Tatsuro Ueda, who transitions to the role of Senior Fellow. The new appointments take effect in January 2027.
Toyota said the leadership reshuffle coincides with the accelerated integration of its joint ventures in the north and south. Ota brings extensive experience in China, having previously served as vice general manager of sales at FAW Toyota, giving him a deep understanding of local distribution channels and consumer preferences. The decision to place a Lexus veteran at the helm of China operations also aligns with the 2027 production start-up of the Lexus Shanghai plant.

Toyota's fiscal first-half results for 2026 show year-on-year growth in both revenue and net profit. While the Chinese market faces intensifying competition from domestic brands, Toyota has maintained relatively stable sales in the region by adjusting its product mix and optimizing distribution channels.

Another key driver behind this personnel shift is the accelerating integration of its northern and southern joint ventures. Following a recent equity transfer, FAW has become a major strategic shareholder in GAC Group. Toyota stated that FAW Toyota and GAC Toyota will jointly shoulder responsibilities for R&D, procurement, production, and sales, aiming for deep coordination across product planning, parts sourcing, manufacturing, and market channels.
Integrating the two joint ventures marks a critical step in Toyota's China strategy. By pooling resources, the automaker aims to cut procurement costs, boost R&D efficiency, and accelerate decision-making during its transition to electrification and intelligent technologies. Ota's arrival signals a new phase where Toyota's China strategy shifts from running parallel tracks to unified coordination.
