Shanghai VW general manager killed during test drive

Shanghai, July 19 (Gasgoo.com) Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co. General Manager Liu Jian, with other three people, was killed on July 17 in a road accident during a test drive in Jiuquan, northwestern China's Gansu province, the company announced today.

Also killed in the accident was the joint venture's public relations director Zeng Jialin. The other two were the driver and an after-sales manager, according to an insider from Shanghai VW. Shanghai Volkswagen has issued a statement that it is operating as normal.

Media reports said that Shanghai VW, a joint venture between SAIC Motor and Volkswagen AG, was holding a meeting in Jiuquan for the Volkswagen brand dealers. General manager Liu Jian and other three people of the company went to attend the meeting and test drive.

The accident was reportedly caused by a head-on collision between the VW Tiguan SUV the four people were in and a heavy dump truck from a construction site. Shanghai VW has sent an emergency team to Jiuquan for investigation into this accident along with local police.

Liu Jian, age 46, entered Shanghai VW in 1986 when he graduated from Shanghai Tongji University. He became general manager of the joint venture in October 2007. In the past two years he has made great efforts to promote the localization of Shanghai VW's current vehicle models, media said.
