Gasgoo Munich-Amid market debate over XPENG's super range extender technology, the automaker is pushing back. Gu Jie, XPENG's senior director of powertrain, publicly clarified the brand's engineering priorities: the core logic isn't a pivot to hybrids. Rather, it preserves the pure-EV driving experience while eliminating range anxiety to cover all travel scenarios.

Gu drew on a simple analogy — a smartphone paired with a power bank — to explain how the system works. The technology defaults to pure-electric driving. For daily commutes and short city trips, the vehicle runs entirely on battery power, preserving the handling, efficiency, and quietness of a true EV. The range extender kicks in only as an emergency power source, activating during long road trips or when charging access is limited. It serves purely as a fallback, leaving the car's core electric identity untouched.
The official explainer takes direct aim at the pain points plaguing traditional extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs). To accommodate their powertrain layouts, most EREVs on the market sacrifice cabin space and chassis tuning, while watering down the pure-electric feel to balance fuel economy. When the battery runs low, these models typically suffer from power loss, increased noise, and a fractured driving experience. The jarring transition can even disrupt the smooth operation of advanced driver-assistance systems and onboard electronics, leaving a noticeable seam between gas and electric power.
According to XPENG, its “one car, dual power” product strategy is an upgrade to pure-electric technology — not a detour. While the pure-EV variants rely on a mature architecture for efficient travel, the super range extender versions layer an independent onboard charging system atop that native EV architecture. The core advantage lies in consistency: even when the battery is severely depleted and the range extender is running continuously, the vehicle's handling, NVH performance, and smart-system operation remain identical to the pure-EV version. That effectively erases the experience gap that typically comes with switching between gas and electric power.
