Mazda raises forecast for North America

From Automotive News | November 05 , 2007 10:30 BJT
TOKYO -- Mazda Motor Corp. has raised its full-year sales forecast for North America.

Mazda now expects to sell 407,000 vehicles in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2008. That is 4,000 units more than the April forecast and 27,000 more than the previous year.

The improved outlook comes despite the overall slump in U.S. demand. Mazda credited brisk sales of its Mazda3 car and CX-7 and CX-9 crossovers.

Sales expanded 8.2 percent to 105,000 units in North America during the fiscal second quarter of July-September, Mazda said today while releasing its earnings report.

Executive Vice President Robert Graziano said the U.S. subprime loan problem has yet to hurt Mazda. But he added that demand for the RX-8 and MX-5 Miata sports models has softened. He called them “discretionary” purchases.

Consolidated operating profit rose a modest 1.5 percent to ¥40.8 billion ($342.9 million) in the second fiscal quarter, up from $337.8 million in the same period a year earlier.

Total sales climbed 7.0 percent to $7.07 billion, from $6.61 billion the year before.
