NIKKEI From NIKKEI| October 21 , 2016 14:58 BJT

Octorber 21 ,2016--Chinese ride-hailing powerhouse Didi Chuxing is considering teaming with Apple on research into self-driving technology, using the massive amount of traffic data the company has collected in China while building a whopping 90% market share.

Didi co-founder Wu Rui touched on the possibility Tuesday, saying that it is just a matter of time. His comments followed a symposium of Japanese and Chinese business leaders in Tokyo. Apple has invested in the Chinese startup, a move many observers see as preparation for a tie-up on self-driving cars.

Wu noted the potential of tapping into the big data that has been collected, such as the routes drivers are taking in different cities at different times. He also pointed out the similarities with Apple when it comes to the focus on usability and innovation of products.

Didi recently announced its acquisition of the Chinese operations of U.S.-based rival Uber Technologies
