Shanghai Lingang Area self-driving base to be covered by 5G networks from China Unicom

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Shanghai Lingang Intelligent Connected Technology Research Center Co.,Ltd and China Unicom officially signed a strategic cooperation agreement on November 28 to promote all-round coverage of 5G network at the autonomous driving base in Shanghai Lingang Area.

The cooperation will help realize the real-time interaction among various transportation data of vehicles and infrastructures by offering wireless communications networks, in a bid to boost the construction of a cooperative intelligent transportation system that coordinates data from pedestrians, vehicles, infrastructures and cloud.

Covering a planned area of 315 square kilometers, Shanghai Lingang Area can offer abundant transportation scenarios for autonomous driving R&D thanks to its availability over five major transportation modes, namely, air, sea, railway, highway and inland waters transportation.

Shanghai unveiled its second batch of public roads for the ICV (Intelligent-connected vehicle) road tests at the 2018 World Autonomous Vehicle Ecosystem Conference on September 18.

There are a total of 12 public roads that will be used for ICV testing, covering the urban arterial roads, the urban secondary trunk roads and the industrial park's arterial roads in Anting Town and Shanghai Lingang Area. Especially, the 26.1-km-long road in Lingang Area will be used in research and testing for autonomous commercial vehicle technologies.

Up until now, Shanghai has extended the length of roads for ICV tests from 5.6km to 37.2km.

Since Shanghai issued China's first batch of ICV road test licenses on March 1, a total of 3 automakers, namely, SAIC Motor, NIO and BMW, have by far been given go-ahead to test their autonomous vehicles on public roads.
