Shanghai puts around 354,000 new energy vehicles on roads in 2023

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- Chinese megacity Shanghai deployed a total of 354,000 new energy vehicles (NEV) across the year of 2023, resulting in a citywide cumulative NEV population of 1.288 million units, according to the government's work report delivered by Gong Zheng, Mayor of Shanghai city, on Jan. 23.

Highlighting the city's commitment to environmental sustainability, the report unveiled that Shanghai successfully executed ten major actions to achieve carbon peaking last year. The city witnessed an impressive addition of 946,000 kilowatts of photovoltaic capacity in 2023. Additionally, the metropolis installed 51,000 new public charging piles, which increased the total volume to 196,000 piles.

Looking ahead to enhance the NEV supporting infrastructures, the report outlined plans to construct an additional 10,000 public charging piles for electric vehicles this year.

Data from the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization revealed substantial growth in the automotive sector. In the first 11 months of 2023, the city's cumulative automobile production reached 1.9 million units, marking a 3.1% year-on-year (YoY) increase. The sector's output value amounted to 686.03 billion in this period, showing a 9.8% growth over a year earlier. NEVs played a pivotal role, with a production volume of 1.17 million units in the same span, indicating a 34.3% YoY jump and contributing to around 14% of China’s overall NEV output.

Shanghai's automotive prowess extended to exports, with a notable 67% increase in the export volume of electric passenger vehicles in 2023. The combined export volume from SAIC Motor and Tesla reached 1.55 million units last year.

On the technological front, Shanghai has emerged as a leader in intelligent mobility. By the end of December 2023, the city had opened 926 intelligent connected vehicle testing roads spanning 1,800 kilometers. Besides, Shanghai had issued 458 licenses to 27 enterprises for road testing and demonstration applications, solidifying its position as a national front-runner.
