Car and City: Model Y crowned No.1 PV model in Shanghai by Feb. registrations
Shanghai (Gasgoo)- In February 2022, there were 33,098 China-made passenger vehicles (PVs) registered in Shanghai, representing a 5.7% year-on-year decrease, while also showing a 45.8% month-on-month drop, according to the data compiled by Gasgoo Auto Research Institute (GARI).
By Feb. registrations of China-built PVs, Shanghai still ranked highest among cities on the Chinese mainland.
Among the top 10 brands by Feb. homemade PV registrations in the megacity, Volkswagen (VW) was still the best-performing one with 64% of the registrations contributed by new energy vehicles (NEVs). BYD was honored the runner-up, while it only got 20 oil-fueled vehicles registered. Tesla ranked fourth as the unique one with only all-electric vehicles for sale. Besides, the three German luxury auto brands— Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi—occupied the No.7 to No.9 spots.
In terms of Feb. 2022 registrations in Shanghai, there were only three oil-fueled models among the 10 top PV models, namely, the Buick GL8, the Mercedes-Benz GLC, and the BMW 3 Series. The top 3 were all full-electric ones, among which the Model Y outsold others with a significant lead. BYD had three models on the top 10 PV models list, including one BEV (the Han EV) and two PHEVs (the Song PLUS DM-i and the Qin PLUS DM-i).
Last month, there were 14,000 domestically built new energy passenger vehicles (NEPVs) registered in Shanghai, representing a 27.3% decline month-over-month, while showing an upward movement of 4.7% from the year-ago period. The megacity's Feb. NEPV registrations were composed of 10,381 all-electric vehicles and 3,619 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (including 480 range-extended electric vehicles).
A total of four brands recorded a NEPV registration volume of over 1,000 units in February in Shanghai, of which BYD was the champion with 1,671 BEVs and 1,607 PHEVs registered respectively. The three leading Chinese NEV startups—NIO, XPeng, and Li Auto—all cracked the top 10 brand rankings by Feb. NEPV registrations in the city.
Among the top 10 best-selling NEPV models in Shanghai in Feb., seven spots were occupied by full-electric products. VW’s ID. series had two models—the ID.3 and the ID.4 X—on the top 10 list. Besides, two models under Chinese NEV start-up brands—the NIO ES6 and the Li ONE—ranked 9th and 10th respectively.
