C Talk | MANN+HUMMEL: From Filtration Expert to Eco Co-Creator, Empowering Global Innovation with "China Speed"
In the global wave of automotive electrification and intelligent transformation, filtration technology—long viewed as a traditional field—is being redefined with new purpose. With more than 80 years of expertise, MANN+HUMMEL has remained a global leader in filtration technology by combining deep technical know-how with agile, forward-thinking strategies.
From its early roots producing textile and filters to becoming the world's largest manufacturer of automotive filters, the company has not only witnessed the golden era of the European automotive industry but is now actively shaping the future through close integration with the dynamic Chinese market.
This integration took center stage at the AUTO SHANGHAI 2025, where MANN+HUMMEL showcased a range of innovative solutions tailored for new energy vehicles (NEVs), including smoke removal filter, smart cabin solutions, and Powertrain & Chassis Filtration solutions. Speaking with Gasgoo, Mr. Thomas Fischer, Non-Executive Chairman of MANN+HUMMEL, revealed that this showcase closely aligns with the company's strategic decision to relocate its new energy vehicle technology center (NEVTC) to China—underscoring the depth of its partnerships with leading Chinese NEV makers.
Efficiency as a strategic imperative
While precise market entry points are essential for technology adoption, it is efficiency transformation that has enabled MANN+HUMMEL to gain a foothold amid sweeping industry shifts. Mr. Fischer noted that while European companies are accustomed to product development cycles of 24 to 36 months, the pace in China demands that this be compressed to just 6 to 12 months. "With our Chinese team here, who show us how to gain speed, we are learning—and gradually mastering—how to boost efficiency," he said.
Digital transformation in action
Digital transformation stands at the core of MANN+HUMMEL's corporate strategy—far beyond buzzwords, it's being translated into tangible value. The company has already embedded sensors into air filters, enabling real-time monitoring of HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system performance and in-cabin air quality. By sharing this data with OEMs, MANN+HUMMEL is enabling dynamic optimization of vehicle filtration systems.
In heavy-duty vehicle applications, digital capabilities are further extending through predictive maintenance solutions that anticipate filter replacement intervals, ensuring uptime and minimizing disruption. "Perhaps in another 10 to 15 years, cars won't even need regular maintenance," Mr. Fischer said with confidence. "With predictive maintenance, we can keep vehicles in optimal condition at all times."
Staying grounded amid the hype
In an era of constant technological flux, MANN+HUMMEL's strategy remains focused and pragmatic: avoid chasing trends blindly, yet remain open to all viable paths. From hydrogen and methanol fuel cells to hybrid drivetrains, the company is actively exploring diverse energy solutions.
"We haven't stopped developing for internal combustion engines, and we're also supporting R&D of battery systems," Mr. Fischer emphasized. "Our positioning is clear: we provide critical technological support for whichever solution prevails."
This focus on core strengths has enabled the company to consistently introduce innovative products in engines, cabins, and drivetrain systems—helping automakers enhance both driving experience and energy efficiency.
From technology expert to ecosystem co-builder
As it advances in both technological exploration and strategic deployment, MANN+HUMMEL not only continues to deepen its core competencies but also expands the boundaries of application—with the goal of evolving from a technical expert into a co-builder of ecosystems.
"We are rethinking the scenarios where filtration technologies can be applied—not just for cleaner mobility, but also in contributing to sustainable development in environmental protection, industry, and construction," said Mr. Fischer.
This expanded vision is already reflected in the company's recent initiatives—from delivering end-to-end air quality management solutions at London Heathrow Airport to deploying digital water management systems in Hilton Head Island. MANN+HUMMEL's technological footprint is now extending into transportation, public infrastructure, and beyond.
The company is also seizing unique opportunities in the Chinese market. Its acquisition of U-Air marked MANN+HUMMEL's formal entry into the filtration segments for semiconductor factories and data centers, further expanding its technological boundaries.
If innovation is MANN+HUMMEL's "hard power," then its profound understanding of global market dynamics is the "soft infrastructure" that supports its expansion. Mr. Fischer firmly believes that healthy competition is a prerequisite for high-quality development. "Competition is the best catalyst for innovation and operational excellence."
He particularly praised the Chinese team's high efficiency and tenacious spirit: "They are both self-driven and responsible—this kind of mindset is invaluable."
Chinese OEMs' global push creates new chances
This spirit is especially critical now, as Chinese automakers rapidly expand into global markets.
In the eye of Mr. Fischer, the internationalization of Chinese OEMs presents new opportunities for global collaboration with MANN+HUMMEL. While Chinese automakers may not yet have fully established supply ecosystems overseas, their strong learning capabilities will enable them to quickly overcome this hurdle. In this journey, MANN+HUMMEL's global network and operational experience across diverse markets can help accelerate the construction and optimization of overseas ecosystems for Chinese automakers.
In his view, the ultimate success in global markets—whether for MANN+HUMMEL or its partners—hinges on one core factor: choosing the right collaborators. "We're still learning how to build truly stable, win-win partnerships. In today's hyper-transparent and competitive digital era, working with strong partners is the only way to go the distance."
Looking ahead: Convergence of tech and society
As Mr. Fischer looks to the future, he sees immense opportunity at the intersection of advanced technologies and societal needs. He singled out China's advances in robotics and artificial intelligence as particularly noteworthy. "The fusion of robotics and AI will unleash transformational breakthroughs. Addressing global challenges like aging populations will require integrating deep expertise across disciplines. It won't be easy, but I'm optimistic."
From conventional filtration to digital transformation, from local roots to global alliances, MANN+HUMMEL's journey underscores a simple truth: in an era of constant disruption, sustained innovation and openness are key to long-term success. As Mr. Fischer put it, "By combining efficiency, digitalization, and a customer-centric mindset with our filtration expertise, we are opening up vast new market opportunities."
In addition, Mr. Fischer also shared additional views on AI applications, the competitive dynamics of the Chinese market, and future trends shaping the automotive industry. For more insights, please watch the full interview and video coverage.
