BYD, KFC partner to merge FLASH charging, drive-thru dining into a 9-minute mobility experience

Gasgoo Munich- On April 8, BYD signed a strategic cooperation agreement with KFC at its global headquarters in Shenzhen, setting the stage for a cross-industry push that blends electric mobility with quick-service dining. The partnership will integrate BYD's FLASH charging technology and smart cockpit systems with KFC's drive-thru service model, aiming to create a new "9-minute, one-stop" energy replenishment ecosystem for both vehicle charging and customer convenience.

The collaboration reflects more than a branding exercise; it signals a deeper convergence of mobility and lifestyle services. BYD, the world's top-selling new energy vehicle manufacturer, and YumChina, the country's largest restaurant operator, are targeting two high-frequency user needs: vehicle recharging and convenient dining. By leveraging technology, the companies aim to dissolve the traditional separation between these scenarios, turning routine stops into integrated, time-efficient experiences.

At the core of the initiative is a synchronized "dual replenishment" model. Drivers can place and pay for orders in advance via BYD's in-car voice assistant while en route. Upon arrival at a KFC drive-thru outlet, meals can be collected instantly, after which the vehicle is plugged into an adjacent BYD Flash charging station. Charging and dining occur simultaneously, with both processes designed to be completed within approximately nine minutes.

On the digital front, the integrated ordering feature will debut on BYD's FANGCHENGBAO TAI7 model before expanding to other core vehicles across the group. The system is designed to align navigation routes with order timing, triggering pickup reminders as the vehicle approaches the restaurant. This coordination is intended to eliminate waiting time, enabling a seamless "arrive-and-collect" experience.

From an infrastructure perspective, BYD plans to progressively integrate its FLASH charging network with KFC's nationwide drive-thru locations. Leveraging its second-generation Blade Battery and high-speed charging capabilities, vehicles can recharge from 10% to 97% in approximately nine minutes—effectively aligning charging duration with a typical meal pickup window.

Yi Yunfei, General Manager of BYD Branding & PR Division, indicated that BYD has already deployed more than 5,000 FLASH charging stations across China, with a target of reaching 20,000 by the end of 2026. The collaboration is intended to embed charging more naturally into everyday routines, allowing users to top up their vehicles during short, routine stops.

KFC China, for its part, sees the initiative as a step beyond digital ordering, combining food service with mobility infrastructure to create a new category of in-car lifestyle experiences.

The partnership establishes a new template for cross-industry integration between the electric vehicle and food service sectors. By connecting digital interaction, physical service touchpoints, and energy infrastructure into a unified system, the model shifts charging from a standalone task to a seamlessly embedded part of daily life.

Looking ahead, both companies plan to expand this approach into additional high-frequency mobility scenarios, further aligning technology, services, and user experience. The broader ambition is to make everyday travel more efficient and enjoyable, where a full battery and a quick meal become part of the same journey rather than separate stops.
