Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - Statistics compiled by Gasgoo.com (Chinese) reveal that 2.57 million SUVs were sold in China from January to April. That figure represents year-on-year growth of 46.2%. SUVs made up 36.0% of all vehicles sold in China over the first four months of this year, up 26.7% year-on-year. As sedan sales continue to fall and minivan sales have only been growing slightly, SUVs continue to be the major driver for sales growth in the Chinese automotive market.The Great Wall Haval H6 was the best-selling Chinese SUV from January to April, followed by the SAIC-GM-Wuling Baojun 560, GAC Trumpchi GS4,VW Tiguan, Changan CS75, Buick Envision, JAC Refine S3, Changan CS35, Honda CR-V and Brilliance Zhonghua V3. Seven of those models were made by domestic own brand manufacturers.

That figure is up 38.4% from a year ago and represents an overall market share of 54.6%, compared to 51.6% in last April. From January to April, own brand SUV sales have totaled 1.48 million units, up 53.1% year-on-year.

According to China Passenger Car Association statistics compiled by Gasgoo.com (Chinese), a total of 46,138 new energy vehicles were sold in the first quarter of this year, up 141.8% from the 19,085 vehicles sold over the first quarter of the previous year. However, compared to new energy automobile sales from the fourth quarter of last year, sales this year have actually decreased by quite a bit. When asked about the changes in sales volumes between last year and this year, CPCA Secretary General Cui Dongshu explained that since the beginning of last year saw major changes to relevent government policies and eligibilities for new energy vehicle subsidies, it has taken a while for the market to pick up.

According to statistics compiled by Gasgoo.com (Chinese), a total of 1.14 million own brand SUVs were sold in the first quarter of this year, up 58.0% from the 726,071 own brand SUVs sold in the first quarter of last year. Own brand SUVs made up 58.4% of all SUVs sold in the country, with their year-on-year growth rate exceeding the market average of 51.9%.

According to statistics from Gasgoo.com (Chinese), 51.5% of all automobiles sold in the first quarter of the year were sedans. Important among the sedan market is the highly competitive midsize sedan segment, which accounted for 16.5% of all sedans sold in the country. A total of 463,691 midsize sedans were sold in the first quarter of the year, down 17.5%, year-on-year.
