Summary: Chinese SUV market from January to June of 2015

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - SUV sales in China have been the major driver of growth for the passenger automotive market. Despite a decline in passenger automobile sales this year, the SUV segment’s performance has continued to remain strong. According to statistics from Gasgoo.com (Chinese), a total of 9.53 million passenger automobiles have been sold over the first half of the year. The figure represents slight positive growth of 7.4%, far less than the double digit rates from previous years. 2.71 million of those sales were of SUVs, up a full 48.0% from last year. By comparison, minivan sales increased 16.8% while sedan sales fell 6.0%.

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - Looking at overall statistics from the Chinese passenger automobile market over the first five months of the year, it is clear that all major own brand automotive manufacturers have been able to maintain positive growth into 2015. Among the leading own brand manufacturers, Changan Automobile sold the most passenger automobiles between January and May of this year. It was followed by Great Wall, Geely, BYD and Chery, in that order.

It was followed by Shanghai VW, FAW-VW, Dongfeng Nissan, Changan Ford, Changan Automobile, SAIC-GM-Wuling, Beijing Hyundai, FAW Toyota and Guangqi Honda.

Summary: China’s midsize sedan market in May

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - While the SUV and minivan segments in China have experienced strong sales growth in May, the sedan segment has yet to recover. According to statistics from Gasgoo.com (Chinese), a total of 909,995 sedans were sold in the country during the month, 9.7% less than the amount sold last May. Although it performed better than the rest of the sedan market, the midsize car segment was berated by heavy competition and declining sales. Midsize sales for the country totaled 154,849 units, down 5.9% from last year.

Summary: Japanese manufacturers’ performance in the Chinese passenger automobile market in May

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - Following the Diaoyu Island incident a few years ago, sales of Japanese branded automobiles fell severely in China. Only recently have Japanese automobile sales begun to bounce back. According to statistics from Gasgoo.com (Chinese), a total of 289,900 Japanese branded automobiles were sold in May, representing positive year-on-year growth of 15.1%. Japanese brands currently control a 19.1% stake in the Chinese passenger automobiles market. While that figure is still far less than the over 20% rates recorded before the Diaoyu Island news, it is still a major improvement from the 17.2% rate from 2014. By comparison, sales of German, US and Korean brand automobiles all fell over 9%, with their respective market shares also decreasing.

Summary: Sales of foreign brand passenger automobiles in May

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai) - Sales of foreign branded passenger automobiles fell again this May. According to statistics from Gasgoo.com (Chinese), a total of 1.52 million passenger automobiles were sold in China in May, down 4.1% from the previous year. Likewise, passenger automobile sales also decreased the previous month, when they fell 6.1%. These decreases were mainly due to the declining performance of foreign brand passenger automobiles. A total of 981,994 foreign brand passenger automobiles were sold during the course of the month, down 2.9% from the 1.01 million units sold last May. Foreign brands’ combined stake in the Chinese passenger automobile market was 64.5% for the month of May, down 4.7% from the 69.2% figure from a year ago.
