Gasgoo.com (Shanghai December 31) - A recent study from the Ministry of Environmental Protection on the state of automobile emissions in 2011 was released this past week, the 21st Century News Group reported. According to the study, a total of 46.07 million tons of automobile emissions were released a year ago, 3.5 percent more than the figure reported the year before.

The emissions were split into four different categories: nitrogen oxide (6.38m tons), particulate matter (621,000 tons), hydrocarbon (4.41m tons) and carbon monoxide (34.67m tons). One fourth of last year's carbon emissions came from automobiles, Wang Eyi, head of the Ministry of Environmental Protection's pollution prevention department.

Pollution from Chinese automobiles is a severe problem in China, and is one of the primary causes behind haze and photochemical smog. A total of 18.51 million vehicles were sold in the country last year. China's total motor-powered vehicle capacity has increased nearly 30 times from 1980, with the country now able to sustain a total of 92.66 million automobiles.
