Gasgoo.com (Shanghai December 27) - Reports that Guangqi Fiat CEO Zheng Xiancong will be leaving the joint venture to join Fiat Automobiles have begun circulating throughout the media. Responding to an inquiry made by auto.sina.com.cn, Guangqi Fiat Executive Vice President Jiang Ping said he had not been informed about Mr. Zheng's decision to leave the JV, and was unable to make any additional comments. However, another source from the JV commented that Mr. Zheng might eventually take up a position at Fiat subsidiary Magneti Marelli.
Mr. Zheng (pictured above) has headed the Guangqi Fiat joint venture since its establishment in March 2010. Reportedly, Mr. Zheng was personally approved after an interview with Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne, who also served as chairman for the Fiat Group Global Sourcing Center and vice president of Fiat China. Prior to his joining Fiat, Mr. Zheng worked at Ford China, where he headed up purchasing and logistics operations.
Mr. Zheng's colorful personality has made him stand out in the Chinese automotive industry. He is especially noted for his love of American rock and roll. During a Fiat test drive event, he was caught singing the Eagles' classic song Hotel California. He has previously been praised as the automotive industry's best rock and roll singer.
Guangqi Fiat's first model, the Fiat Viaggio (pictured below), made its market debut this September. 7,193 Viaggios have been sold from September to November.
