Gasgoo.com (Shanghai April 7) - China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and National Development and Reform Commission revealed today that they would not be releasing new plans for the national automobile industry until at least 2016, Caixin Online reported today. When asked to clarify, officials said that since energy-saving and new energy vehicle plans were already drawn up, there was no need for another set of plans for the Twelfth Five-Year Guideline, a national economic directive lasting from 2011 to 2015.

The news comes on the heels of a similar announcement made by BAIC Group Chairman Xu Heyi last week. Mr. Xu added that he expects domestic automobile production to reach 25 million units by the end of the Guideline.

"What's important right now isn’t sales volume, but automobile quality and performance," a source within the National Development and Reform Commission said in an interview.
