Phasing out of low-emission vehicle subsidies of little effect to manufacturers

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai October 11) - The phasing out of subsidies for low-emission vehicles will see around 90 percent of vehicles previously covered now ineligible for discounts, sanqindaily.com reported today. There were over 420 vehicles eligible before for the 3,000 yuan ($472.57) subsidy. That number is now reduced to 37 models.

Due to a lack of low emission vehicles from FAW Toyota, FAW Mazda and similar brands, there are currently no sales promotion schemes put out in response to the new legislation. Meanwhile, FAW-VW and Shanghai GM, having models which are still eligible under the policy shift, also see little influence from the policy change. One unnamed FAW dealer said that they were only three models they were selling, the 1.6 L manual Golf and two New Boras, which are now ineligible for the subsidies.

In addition, several upcoming models will fall under the revised requirements for the subsidy.

A lot of consumers rushed to buy low-emission vehicles in September prior to the phasing out of policies, which would see the number of buyers in October decrease.
