Export market
Mexico is the world's tenth largest exporter of automotive vehicles in the world, including family cars, sports utility vehicles and other vehicles for civilian use. Mexico's main commercial automotive partner is the United States, which accounted for 86.4% of Mexico's exports in 2004.
Import market
Fifty eight percent of the automobiles sold in Mexico are imported, of which, 75% come from the United Sates. Increased Mexican production of new models is now also increasing U.S. exports for auto parts.
Perspective
Free trade agreements with other countries, including the European Union, most of Latin America and Japan, mean that a plant in Mexico can ship cars to much of the world with low or nonexistent tariffs.
