Brand name design resemblance? AVATR responds

Edited by Taylor From Gasgoo

Gasgoo Munich-AVATR released an official statement on Weibo addressing a market phenomenon: a certain brand's name design bears a striking resemblance to its own.

AVATR stated in the release: "Today, we see a brand name on the market that is extremely similar to AVATR in design. We view this as an honor, but even more so as a warning: Chinese automakers cannot follow the path of 'Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V,' nor can they return to the old ways of incorrect 'reverse engineering.' Being imitated is the original creator's honor; driving the industry forward together is the responsibility that Chinese brands should shoulder."

Although AVATR did not name a specific brand in its statement, multiple media reports indicate that Saidou Technology is set to officially launch its new brand, "AIVA," tonight. Several bloggers have already noted that this brand is highly similar to AVATR's English identifier, "AVATR."

AVATR's statement has drawn significant attention, largely due to the broader industry context in which it was made.

From the early controversies over domestic brands "reverse engineering" exterior designs, to recent accusations against some startups of "benchmarking international luxury models" or even "copycat designs," the debate over original capability and independent development has persisted even as China's auto industry has rapidly risen.

AVATR's statement sends a clear signal: if Chinese automotive brands truly want to enter the global market, they cannot rely on imitation and following others forever.

AVATR's Chief Design Officer, who previously led the design of several high-end BMW models, crafted the "Emotional New Luxury" design philosophy that runs through the entire family. At the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the AVATR VISION XPECTRA concept car made its Asian debut, establishing the brand's new-generation design language. Previously, AVATR also partnered with former Dior and Fendi artistic director Kim Jones to launch the AVATR 012, a global limited edition of 700 units.
