Shanghai, May 5 (Gasgoo.com) Chinese carmaker Brilliance Auto recently said that it is planning to begin selling cars in Australia as early as 2011, local media reported.
Brilliance plans to begin exporting the Cross small car to Australia in 2011, selling its small Cross hatchback first, then the sedan. The company has been in talks with a potential Australian importer and may close the deal later this year, said a top executive at the recent Beijing auto show.
BMW's Chinese venture with Brilliance will develop a "new energy vehicle" for the Chinese market. The brand is keen to try Australia and expects to sell 2000 cars per year, accounting for just 0.2% of the competitive market.
Ateco Automotive, an importer of Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Citroen, Maserati and Ferrari cars to Australia, last year began selling China's Great Wall vehicles and this year it will begin selling Chery small cars.
Brilliance already exports to Egypt and other countries, as well as selling 300,000 cars annually in the domestic Chinese market.
Small Chinese carmaker Lifan Motors also plans to sell cars in Australia and may eventually assemble cars locally, said drive.com.au.
