Chevrolet to offer Siri voice-activated software in 6 more nameplates

General Motors said it will offer Apple's Siri voice-activated telematics assistant in six more Chevrolet nameplates. GM began offering Siri in Chevrolet Spark and Sonic models equipped with the Chevrolet MyLink telematics system in February.

Siri will be available on all 2014 SS and Volt models and on LT and LTD trim levels of the Camaro, Cruze, Equinox and Malibu, a GM spokeswoman said.

Chris Perry, Chevrolet vice president of U.S. marketing, said in a statement the application complements Chevrolet MyLink features and "existing capabilities to help deliver an incredible driving experience."

Drivers activate Siri by pressing a button on the steering wheel, then they can dictate commands.

Through Chevrolet MyLink, Siri allows users to make calls, select and play music, hear and compose text messages, get directions and use other Siri functions via Bluetooth or through a USB port.

Siri's Eyes Free setting reduces driver distraction by keeping the iPhone screen from lighting up when the vehicle is in motion.

Siri requires Internet access and is available on iPhone 4S, 5, 5c and 5s; third- and fourth-generation iPads; iPad mini; and the fifth-generation iPod touch.

GM is not the only automaker to offer Siri software. Honda offers it as a dealer-installed option on its 2013 Accord and Acura RDX and ILX. Other automakers that plan to offer Siri include BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Audi, Chrysler and Jaguar Land Rover.
