China’s dealer vehicle inventory coefficient declines MoM in July

Gasgoo Munich- The China Automobile Dealers Association (CADA) recently released the results of its "Automobile Dealer Inventory" survey for July 2026. The data reveals a comprehensive dealer inventory coefficient of 1.48 for the month — a 6.3% drop from June, yet a 9.6% increase from a year earlier.

The passenger vehicle market remained sluggish in July, with end-market demand dampened by the seasonal lull.

Analysts point out that the aggressive mid-year sales push in June cannibalized subsequent demand. Compounding this, extreme weather — from scorching heat to typhoons and torrential rain — dampened showroom traffic and deliveries. Without holiday spending to spur consumption, consumers are keeping their wallets closed. Family replacement cycles are stretching out, leaving the retail side without fresh momentum as the market slips back into its seasonal decline.

Against this backdrop, dealers have little appetite for restocking, and OEMs are pulling back on wholesale shipments accordingly. To ease cash flow pressure, dealers are accelerating the liquidation of existing stock, reducing total channel inventory compared to the end of June.

According to market scan data from the CADA’s passenger vehicle Branch, nationwide retail sales hit 1.506 million units in July. Based on this figure, total dealer inventory at the end of July stood at approximately 2.2 million vehicles — a decline in overall scale from June’s close.

By brand category, inventory levels diverged. The coefficient for high-end luxury and imported brands fell 16.7% to 1.55, while joint ventures dropped 13.0% to 1.54. Domestic brands, however, saw a slight increase of 0.7%, reaching 1.44.

The survey also found fewer brands sitting on more than two months' worth of stock in July compared to the previous month, with just four making the list. Ranked by inventory depth, they are: FAW Hongqi, Dongfeng Nissan, Jaguar Land Rover, and FAW-Volkswagen.

Looking ahead to August, the association anticipates sales will improve on July, bolstered by back-to-school demand and "818" promotional events. Yet, headwinds — from heat-dampened traffic to cautious consumer sentiment and bloated dealer inventories — haven't fundamentally eased. The sustainability of any recovery remains to be seen.

The CADA advises dealers to gauge demand rationally based on ground realities and keep inventory levels in check. It also recommends amplifying promotional efforts around "trade-in and scrappage policies." By prioritizing service to boost consumer confidence and placing cost reduction and efficiency first, dealers can better mitigate operational risks.
