China's auto makers need at least five years to catch up with its competitors worldwide, said Michael Dunne, president of Hong Kong-based Dunne & Co. Thursday at the Global Automotive Forum.
''Chinese auto makers are coming up now, but they need to improve their products' quality and brand image so that they can go to higher places,'' Michael told the Global Times.
China's self-owned brands like Chery, Geely and BYD dominate the low-cost auto market, but if they want to go out for global disputes, they need to build strong brand image so that they can directly compete with others like Ford and Toyota, explained Michael.
The Global Automotive Forum has been held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Lasting from September 16 to 17, the forum aims to discuss issues and challenges that will shape the future of the automotive industry as it goes through a critical era of transition - including the impact of China's automotive industry emergence.
