Shanghai, November 19 (Gasgoo.com) China's mainland and Taiwan automakers will team up to produce 45,000 electric cars a year on the island by 2015, CCTV.com reported today. Car companies from both sides will meet in Taipei next week to identify more areas of their cooperation.

The two-day conference on Nov. 24-25 is expected to attract more than 100 executives from the mainland's auto sector. Taiwan's economic department said the island's engine and battery production has increased and it wants to work with the mainland on auto detection and standards setting.

The cross-strait conference on electric cars will usher in closer partnership between Taiwan and mainland China in the R&D of environmentally-friendly electric vehicles. The meeting is a program under the "Bridge-Building Project" designed to bolster industrial exchanges and cooperation across the Taiwan Strait.

About 10 special zones will be built for electric car development around Taiwan over the next three years, and by 2015 local and mainland automakers will produce 45,000 electric cars annually on the island, with one third for export.

Taiwanese electric car makers are starting their foray into the global auto market, particularly with their development of on-board energy storage packs and electric motors.
