China passenger vehicle retail sales expected to reach 1.65 million units in June

Based on terminal demand trends, June retail sales of passenger vehicles in China are projected at around 1.65 million units, representing a 9.3% month-on-month increase, according to the latest survey from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Within this, new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales are expected to reach approximately 1.05 million units, up 10.5% MoM, with a penetration rate of about 63.6%.

Major automakers accounting for roughly 70% of total market sales are targeting about a 10% month-on-month increase in June retail volumes, reflecting a strong intent to push for half-year performance goals.

After a "sharp YoY decline with only a mild MoM rebound" in May, China's auto market is entering the crucial mid-year closing period with a clearer recovery signal in June.

Against a backdrop of weakening macro consumption and supportive policy measures, NEVs continue to accelerate structural gains in market share, while internal combustion engine vehicles remain under sustained pressure. Overall, June's recovery momentum is expected to remain broadly comparable to May.

XPENG unveils MONA L03 SUV, expanding its entry-level EV lineup

On June 22, XPENG's vice president Yu Tao introduced the first SUV model under the MONA product line, officially named the XPeng MONA L03. The model is scheduled for its public debut on July 2.

The MONA series originates from an internal project codename "MONALISA" . In the product architecture, "M" represents sedan models (corresponding to the already launched M03), while "L" represents SUV models, now embodied by the newly announced L03.

Both the M03 and L03 are designed around a unified concept targeting younger consumers, focusing on entry-level smart electric mobility. The goal is to become a first personal NEV for young buyers, offering two body styles—sedan and SUV—to match different usage and space preferences.

Strategically, the launch of the L03 expands the MONA lineup beyond a single model, strengthening XPENG's entry-level product matrix. It enables broader coverage of the compact EV segment by adding an SUV option with more space and practicality, complementing the existing sedan-focused M03.

Sunwoda battery project lands in Beijing Shunyi

According to the Environmental Protection Bureau of Shunyi District in Beijing, a major project by Sunwoda has officially received environmental approval and will be located in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Intelligent Connected New Energy Vehicle Technology Eco Park in Shunyi.

The total investment of the project is RMB 5.367 billion. It will include the construction of four lithium-ion battery cell production lines and four PACK assembly lines. Once fully operational, the project is expected to reach an annual capacity of 41.32 GWh, with projected annual output value of approximately RMB 9.5 billion by 2030.

The facility will fill a gap in large-scale local battery manufacturing in Shunyi, enabling localized supply for regional automakers, reducing supply chain costs, and enhancing the competitiveness of the district's NEV industrial cluster.

The project also represents Sunwoda's strategic expansion into northern China and deeper integration into the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei battery and NEV ecosystem.
