Gasgoo.com (Shanghai May 30) - The Beijing Municipal Department of Transportation has washed aside rumors of specially-reserved plates for certain models, affirming that the only way to obtain a new license number is via the monthly drawing, the Beijing News reported today.

Reports have recently been circulating across the Internet that people have been receiving text messages from a Beijing Hyundai dealer claiming to have several thousand vehicles with specially reserved license numbers in stock. Beijing Hyundai denied any knowledge of the messages, saying there are no such vehicles in stock. The case is currently being investigated by law enforcement officials.

The Department of Transportation affirmed that the license plate process is "open, fair and clean," and asked for any suspicious messages to be reported to the police.
