Gasgoo.com (Shanghai May 18) - Sales of Skodas in China from the beginning of this year to May 6 have surpassed 700,000 vehicles, statistics from Gasgoo.com (Chinese) reveal. The sales number represents a new milestone for the Czech manufacturer and its operating joint venture, Shanghai VW. By comparison, it took until June 18 last year for Skoda sales to surpass the 500,000 vehicle mark, evidence that the Skoda brand has made significant progress in China.
Skoda currently employs a three model strategy in China, which covers the subcompact, compact and midsize segments. The strategy began in June 2007 with the Chinese market debut of the Octavia compact (pictured above), and was later backed up by the introductions of the Fabia subcompact (pictured below) and Superb midsize in late 2008 and August 2009, respectively. Since 2007, cumulative sales of the Octavia have exceed 450,000 units, while sales of the Fabia and Superb have managed to top 130,000 and 110,000 units, respectively.
Shanghai VW also has plans to introduce new variants of the three Skodas to satisfy more specific consumer demands. These include the environmentally conscious Octavia GreenLine, the sporty Octavia RS and the Fabia Scout compact SUV.
