Renault mulling China production of passenger vehicles

Gasgoo From Global Times

French automaker Renault is now considering producing its passenger vehicles in China, said Chen Guozhang, president of Renault China Wednesday.

Previously in September, Renault's CEO Carlos Ghosn expressed that the company was considering the cooperation with China's Dongfeng Motor Corporation on Renault's project, Dongfeng however did not comment on the issue.

In 2004, Renault and Dongfeng started their partnership when they signed an agreement for the production of the former's models in the Chinese mainland. However, it (agreement) had to be suspended due to the two companies not arriving at a conclusion as to the factory's location.

Renault currently maintains its business in China by exporting already-finished autos, but at an unsatisfactory volume for the company. In the past three quarters, the company sold only about ten thousand units.
