SAIC and VW to jointly produce electric compact

Gasgoo.com (Shanghai May 3) - SAIC Motor is developing an electric compact with its joint venture partner Volkswagen, the Guangzhou Daily reported today. SAIC is hoping to capitalize on VW's recent track record, with the German automobile giant having scored successes with the Passet (Lingyu), Lavida and New Passet.

The announcement comes only days after SAIC's Chairman Hu Maoyuan signed an agreement of cooperation with Martin Winterkorn, CEO of VW, in Germany. According to the agreement, both companies will begin joint research on vehicle platform and engine at VW's plant in Germany.

Additionally, SAIC and VW have also agreed to cooperate in developing other new energy vehicle technology for their Shanghai VW joint venture, including looking into future own brand car production.
