Gasgoo.com (Shanghai June 12) - Shanghai General Motors' six millionth vehicle, a red Chevrolet Malibu, rolled off the assembly lines of its Jinqiao production site yesterday, China Business News reported today. The event marks a new milestone for the manufacturer, which produced its five millionth vehicle less than nine months ago.
Shanghai GM General Manager Ye Yongming has previously announced the joint venture's intent to sell two million vehicles annually by 2015. In order to fulfill this goal, the JV has already begun work on boosting its annual production capacity to two million units. Shanghai GM started construction work on a new production site in Wuhan's Jiangxia District earlier this month. The site is to be the JV's fourth after its factories in Shanghai, Shandong's northeastern city of Yantai and Liaoning's capital of Shenyang. The joint venture is also in the process of expanding production capacity at its existing sites.
Furthermore, an increasing number of Shanghai GM's platforms are being developed in association with GM's international design teams. "Our joint venture's models aren't simply the product of localization, but are developed [internationally]," Executive Vice President Joseph Liu boasted.
