Gasgoo.com (Shanghai June 28) - The Ministry of Environmental Protection has given the go-ahead to Shanghai GM's project to expand its Shenyang production site, auto.163.com reported today. With official approval in hand, the joint venture has announced that it will begin construction work next month.
The Shenyang factory will reportedly be able to manufacture 300,000 vehicles and 450,000 engines when expansion is completed. Shanghai GM will invest 7 billion yuan ($1.08b) to expand the site, which currently produces 200,000 vehicles annually. Shanghai GM hopes to increase the number of models produced at the site, which is currently primarily responsible for manufacturing the hot-selling Chevy Cruze (pictured).
The Shenyang factory was established in 2004 as a result of cooperation between SAIC Group, GM and truck maker Jinbei. The factory was originally tasked with production of the Buick GL8 series.
