Shanghai, May 21 (Gasgoo.com) Shanghai plans to extend its subsidies for the city's car owners to trade in high-polluting old vehicles for energy-efficient, greener new cars until the end of this year, local media reported today, citing the city's commerce commission.

By December 31, car owners in Shanghai will be able to get subsidies ranging from 3,000 yuan ($440) to 7,500 yuan if they replace their outdated vehicles with cleaner new cars. The old vehicles include mini vans, light commercial vehicles and heavy-duty trucks that fail to meet China-I emission standards.

Previously, the city's subsidies for promoting clean vehicles were offered to the trade-in between June 1, 2009 to April 30, 2010, as part of the central government's stimulus measures to spur new-energy vehicle demand, said Shanghai Daily.

Over 14,000 applications were received for the clean-car subsidies in Shanghai during the 16-month period. This 'cash for clunkers' program, with subsidies of 90 million yuan, had generated vehicle sales valued at 2.3 billion yuan.

The Commission of Commerce said the subsidy policy has effectively raised environmental awareness among the city's vehicle consumers and helped promote the government-urged energy efficiency.
